Liam is stepping into Junior (U19) racing in 2026. This is a level where competition, travel, and expectations increase significantly. Over the past two seasons, he has progressed steadily across mountain bike, cyclocross, and gravel, racing both nationally and internationally, confirming he is ready for this next step. His recent time racing and training in Europe reinforced both how far he has come and how much opportunity lies ahead.
Junior racing is the stage before athletes can receive meaningful funding, such as “carding” and team support. Riders must prove themselves by traveling to key races both nationally and internationally, earning results, and building experience and UCI points that future programs look for.
At this level, there is almost no national or provincial financial support, national and international travel is extensive, young riders cannot manage logistics alone, and parents or team staff must travel with them, often stepping away from work. These seasons rely almost entirely on family and community support.
Liam’s pre-season is planned to begin with time in Spain in February, followed by training and racing in Victoria, and then more racing in Fayetteville, Arkansas. These camps and races are in Feb and March, before the main season even begins. The season includes at least 4 Quebec race weekends, 2 in the Maritimes, 4 in Western Canada including Canmore Whistler, a return to Victoria for Canadian National Championships. There will be additional racing and training blocks in Montana, Wisconsin, and Utah and Europe. Liam will be updating his website soon with a full 2026 schedule, (Liam-McFarlane.com)
The focus will be on the UCI Junior Series, UCI Continental Series, and Canada Cups, with the potential to qualify for Junior World Cups in Europe based on performance.
The cost is going be substantial (over 40K before equipment) and we cannot do this alone, while we try to support the family and as well run our business.
